I want to report on a calculation of the so-called stable part of the cohomology of symplectic groups over the integers, in particular at the prime 2. The approach is via the group completion theorem, which relates this stable part to sympletic K-groups of the integers. The latter has recently seen advances in the case of general number rings and I will explain how these can be brought to bear.
