What is questions form! (December 03)

As anticipated after last week's talk, this week there is no talk. The reason is the usual: we want all of you to attend the WiM event on Thursday.

For next week, instead, we are planning to have a what is session. We would like to collect your preferred topic by Thursday at noon. This way we can look for speakers for Tuesday.

PhD Seminar (Winter Semester 2024-25)

Philosophy

We want to maintain the atmosphere we had last semester, based on the following.

• We want to encourage participation from diverse research groups, inviting speakers to choose topics they are experts in or passionate about.
• We want speakers to be able to choose what they want to present. Talks can range from introductory presentations to applications, or overviews.
• We want the audience to be always fully able to engage. Unlike traditional seminars where talks are interconnected, our format allows each presentation to stand independently, meaning that even if you miss a talk, you can still fully engage with and understand the following ones.

Theme

Unlike the last semester we will not restrict to a single topic. Instead we will give freedom to the speaker to choose what they want to talk based on their interests. In order to facilitate the choice of argument, here are some possible suggestions/leit motives that can be of interest:

• Why is the naive approach wrong?
• A surprising application of [insert here e.g. condensed maths]
• A result that I always wanted to understand the proof of
• Duality results

General Information

• Talks should last around 45-60 minutes, leaving ample time for discussions and elucidations at the board, and aim to be a gentle introduction to the topic.
• This gathering is also the perfect opportunity to ask questions non-directly related to mathematics, such as suggestions for conferences, how to get access to resources offered by the university, how to get a decent sleep schedule, etc.
• We invite you to join us for dinner right after the talk, where we can continue our discussions. If you would like to participate, you have two options: you can either bring your own food, or you can eat together with us (at a small cost) some food that will be delivered to the department (e.g., pizza).

Time and place

Tuesday at 18:15, in room M311 (SFB lecture hall). We want all of you to take part also in the events of WiM (https://wimregensburg.app.uni-regensburg.de/standard_index.html). Therefore we decided to not have a talk in the weeks when WiM organise something.
